Bed-type milling machines

Bed-type milling machines have not the knee, in this type of machines table is mounted directly over a fixed bed, table motion is applied only in the longitudinal direction and cross directions. Vertical motion is realized by the spindle head instead of the table. This constructions provides better rigidity to milling machine structure, increases the accuracy of milling (in comparison with knee-type milling machines), permits heavy cutting loads and greatly increases the permissible table load, which allows to process heavier and largesized parts.

Bed-type milling machines are available as horizontal, vertical or universal milling machines.

Horizontal bed-type milling machines.  Horizontal mounted spindle can be moved up and down a column.  These machines are normally provided with an automatic cycle of approach of the cutter and workpiece relative to each other, and rapid movement of the cutter and the table during the non-productive part of the cycle.

Vertical bed-type milling machines. These machines have vertical oriented spindle. The head box may be mounted over cross-arm to obtain transverse movement.  The cross-arm can itself move either up and doent a column or upright.

Universal bed-type milling machines. This type is the combination of horizontal and vertical spindle heads. 

Advantages:

• High rigidity structure, low vibration;
• Heavy cutting loads for a long time in the milling works;
• High level of automatic;
• Large payload for a table, can process heavy and large workpieces;
• Milling machines with multiple spindles can perform different operations simultaneously;

Disadvantages:

• Less flexible than Knee-type milling machines. Suited for jobs where changes in the setups are not much frequent;
• Huge power is required for work;
