Turning is one of the most important material removal methods in the manufacturing Industry. An important machine that is can be met in any workshop is the conventional lathes, the most versatile and widely used machine tools all over the world. Slight differences in the various engine lathes make it easy to group them into three categories: lightweight bench engine lathes, conventional lathes and gap lathes.

  • Bench engine lathes are generally small lathes with a swing diameter over bed of 250mm and less. This machine can be mounted to a bench or table top. These lathes can accomplish most machining jobs, but may be limited due to the size of the material that can be turned or material hardness what can be processed because of small motor power. This machine good choice for small tool rooms, maintenance shops, jewelry manufacturing and for home and hobby using.
  • Conventional lathes (standard manufacturing lathes) and are used for all lathe operations such as turning, drilling and boring, reaming, threading, taper turning, knurling and so on. This type of lathe can handle workpiece up to 650mm in diameter and up to 15000 mm long. This lathes designed for the efficient turning of workpieces in small-lot and serial production.
  • Gap lathes are similar to conventional lathes except that gap. Gap lathes can be adjusted to turn larger diameter and longer workpiece. The operator can increase the swing by moving the bed a distance from the headstock, which is usually 30-60 centimeters. By sliding the bed away from the headstock, the gap lathe can be used to turn more longer workpieces between centers.
